The Department of Anatomy, Indira Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute, Puducherry is a pre-clinical department actively engaged in teaching undergraduates. We strongly believe that laboratory experience, based on the dissection of human body, should remain the cornerstone of anatomy training for medical students for improved understanding of the concepts of medicine. During dissection the student is provided with a unique opportunity to explore human body in its three dimensional structure and to discover unexpected pathology and biological variations.. We are actively involved in procuring unclaimed cadavers from the Government Hospital – Puducherry, which are then embalmed and preserved for undergraduate study and research purposes. Several people have volunteered to donate their body after death to our department and the list is increasing every day.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Our department strives for excellence in anatomy education by:<\/p>\n

  1. Making the students proficient in basic clinical anatomy<\/li>\n
  2. Facilitating students to bridge basic anatomical knowledge with clinical practice.<\/li>\n
  3. Developing and implementing the most innovative technologies in teaching learning methods.<\/li>\n
  4. Providing hands on laboratory experience in human dissection thus laying the foundation for the surgeons of the future.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    At the end of the course in Anatomy, the MBBS students should be able to<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Point out and state the gross anatomical features of various structures and organs of the human body.<\/li>\n
    2. Recognize and state the histological features of various tissues and organs of the human body with functional correlation.<\/li>\n
    3. State the development of various structures of the human body, differentiate abnormal development and interpret the formation of various congenital anomalies.<\/li>\n
    4. State the basic principles of genetics and understand the basis of genetic disorders.<\/li>\n
    5. Point out the features of various appearances of the normal human body in skiagrams after routine radiological investigations.<\/li>\n
    6. Outline the internal structure in relation to the external or surface features of the body.<\/li>\n
    7. State the features of normal postnatal growth and recognize any variation.<\/li>\n
    8. Apply the basic knowledge of anatomy in the practice of medical sciences and demonstrate an interest in continuing to learn advances in anatomy and apply the same in medical practice.<\/li>\n
    9. Identify the prominent anatomical structures in the living human being and draw inferences for the purpose of anatomical diagnosis of the disease.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
